“Humane Education” is a special type of instruction that encourages empathy, compassion, and respect for people, animals, and the environment as well as recognizing the connection among these. We believe that introducing Humane Education into a child’s life early and often will help ensure a more kind and compassionate future.
To create a more humane future for our city by teaching responsible and loving pet care and promoting respect and compassion for all living creatures in the hearts and minds of children, teens, and young adults within our community.
Camp Humane What’s better than having fun AND learning? Having fun and learning about animals, of course! Bring your child or teen to Camp Humane at the San Antonio Humane Society to receive his or her unique humane education. Kids will learn about humane living and domestic, wild, and exotic animals through our exciting workshops, presentations, crafts, and hands-on experiences!

The San Antonio Humane Society is excited to introduce the Shelter Helpers Service Club, an extension of our popular Camp Humane program. The Shelter Helpers Service Club is designed for middle school and high school students who are interested in volunteering at the SAHS, but are under the age requirement to become general shelter volunteers. Each session offers participants a unique opportunity to complete a variety of service projects around the SAHS campus. Some of the projects may include preparing enrichment items for our pets, cleaning kennels, beautifying SAHS grounds, and more. Students can earn up to 5 volunteer hours for their participation in the program.
These opportunities provide a unique way to learn more about the SAHS mission. We have tour options available for folks of all ages that will provide insight into the work we do in the community. We can also offer humane education outreach to schools, libraries, and community centers. Visit our Educational Tours and Outreach page for more information and to submit a programming request.
In 2016, the San Antonio Humane Society partnered with Glenoaks Elementary School to create a program for students needing additional reading practice. Throughout the year a humane educator and canine companion visited the school and the students participating in the program took turns reading out loud to this special animal ambassador. Read more about this program.
Bringing Humane Education into the community is one of our top priorities. During the school year, we take our educational programs to area schools, libraries, and community centers. For more information, please contact our Humane Educators at education@SAhumane.org.
