Charity Navigator is the nation’s largest and most-utilized evaluator of charities. They rate charities based on their financial health, accountability, and transparency. To rate financial health, Charity Navigator obtains the charity’s 990 forms directly from the IRS and then evaluates the financials of the non-profit. Ratings are current and updated yearly. To rate accountability and transparency, Charity Navigator answers these two questions: 1) Does the charity follow good governance and ethical best practices? and 2) Does the charity make it easy for donors to find critical information about the organization? To answer these questions, Charity Navigator again looks at the non-profit’s 990 forms and the organization’s website. Of the thousands of charities evaluated, only 1/4 receive a 4-Star rating, the highest rating awarded by Charity Navigator.
