Registration for Spring and Summer 2023 Camp Humane is now open!
The Camp Humane program will give campers the opportunity to go behind-the-scenes of the SAHS to learn more about its mission and role in the community. We will focus on encouraging empathy, compassion, and respect for people, animals, and the environment as well as recognizing the connection among these. In addition, each camp session will have a unique theme for specialized learning. This program is available for campers in grades 1-12.
Please note that the SAHS Camp Humane Programs are not licensed by the Texas Department of State Health Services.
Space is limited to 16 campers per session. Registration closes 7 days before the session begins. For more information see Camp Humane FAQ!

Campers unfold newspaper for puppy kennels, clean windows, prep enrichment items, and pick up trash around the campus. Service Camp participants may also get the opportunity to bathe dogs, assist kennel staff with daily cleaning, or walk the field as official SAHS pooper-scoopers! This is a fun way give back to the shelter, and our animals and staff are always appreciative of our campers’ assistance!
A favorite activity is reading to the puppies and kittens, which is great social time for kids and animals alike! Along with hanging out with the animals here at the shelter, campers will get the chance to meet some exotic animal friends as well. From bugs to birds to giant snakes, you never know who, or what, might make an appearance at Camp Humane!
Campers may make toys/blankets for our shelter pets or create adoption posters for some of our longer-term residents. We will do cool art projects such as colorful insect collages, crayon leaf imprints, and paper bag puppets. Campers will create their own unique photo frame as a personalized memento of their week at camp, and may even get the chance to upcycle a t-shirt into a reusable tote bag.
What about a dog trainer? Or a zookeeper? Are you interested in learning more about the native animal species that live here in Texas? Camp Humane hosts several guest presenters who do some amazing work at the SAHS and in the local San Antonio community. These interesting presentations and engaging activities will teach campers about animal behavior, careers working with animals, Texas ecology, habitat conservation, and more!
