Pet Cancer Awareness

Did you know that cancer is the primary cause of death in pets? It is estimated that 1 in every 3 dogs and 1 in every 4 cats will get cancer once in their lives. Cancer is an uncontrollable multiplication of cells. It can develop in any organ and in any pet, but it is more common in older pets and certain breeds.

Take a Bite ouf of Cancer

Spaying or neutering, an effective strategy against pet overpopulation, is another way to prevent cancers such as mammary tumors and testicular cancer.

There are certain precautions that can be taken to ensure your pets remain healthy and cancer free:

– A healthy diet and frequent exercise are two important factors to a healthy pet. Not only does obesity lead to some cancers, it can also play a role in diabetes and heart disease. Exercise results in increased blood circulation and increased immunity for your pet.

– Limiting sun exposure is also a way to eliminate some cancers. Pets, like people, can have skin sensitivity and can therefore be affected by some skin cancers. Dogs and cats with a lighter-hair coat are most affected by sun exposure. When taking your dog for a walk, make sure to apply some sort of sun protection. Look for an FDA-approved sunscreen, such as Epi-Pet Sun Protector Sunscreen Spray, that is safe for use on dogs.

– If you feel like your pet is overly anxious or frustrated, try some de-stressing techniques like massage or giving a little extra attention to your pet.

Lower your pet’s risk of being affected by cancer by providing them with lots of love, healthy foods, exercise, and by visiting your local veterinarian for regular check-ups.
