Summer Camp Humane
UPDATE: The San Antonio Humane Society is committed to providing a safe and respectful environment for all of our employees, pets and community. We are doing our best to provide safe services based on guidance from the city and state, to do our part to prevent the spread of Covid-19 in our community.
In an abundance of caution, the SAHS has decided to not have our Camp Humane programs this year. This was a hard decision for us to make, but we remain committed to protecting the health of our staff and community members.
In lieu of Camp Humane, we have an exciting new program that we have been working to unveil - Connected Classroom! It is a virtual Humane Education program that you can enjoy from the comfort of your home. For more information on Connected Classroom, please follow this link to more information: SAhumane.org/education.
As always, we thank you for your patience during this time. Rest assured that our Camp Humane onsite programming will return!
We hope to see you in 2021 - Spend A Week with the Animals (June, July & August)
Is your child interested in learning all they can about the animals who live at home and out in the wild? Let them spend a week this summer with the animals at Summer Camp Humane at the San Antonio Humane Society! It’s a great opportunity for your child to receive a unique learning experience about the humane treatment and care of domestic and wild animals. Attendees will participate in workshops, crafts, games, service projects, animal expert presentations, and hands-on animal experiences. Five weeks of camp will take place this Summer and registration is limited, so be sure to register your child soon to save a seat for this fun-filled educational experience.
The Beginning Service Camp and Service Camp sessions will place a large focus on service and volunteer work throughout the shelter during the week. Participants of either Service Camp session will receive credit for 5 hours of volunteer work for each day of camp attended.
The Place for animal loving kids to learn about pets!
If you have any other questions, please email the Humane Educators at education@SAhumane.org. Thank you!
Camp Humane Service Work
One of the highlights at Camp Humane is participating in service work throughout the week.
Campers unfold newspaper for puppy kennels, clean windows, prep enrichment items, and pick up trash around the campus. Service Camp participants may also get the opportunity to bathe dogs, assist kennel staff with daily cleaning, or walk the field as official SAHS pooper-scoopers! This is a fun way give back to the shelter, and our animals and staff are always appreciative of our campers’ assistance!
Camp Humane Projects
Camp Humane is a great place to unleash your creativity!
Campers may make toys/blankets for our shelter pets or create adoption posters for some of our longer-term residents. We will do cool art projects such as colorful insect collages, crayon leaf imprints, and paper bag puppets. Campers will create their own unique photo frame as a personalized memento of their week at camp, and may even get the chance to upcycle a t-shirt into a reusable tote bag.
Camp Humane Animal Interactions
A week at Camp Humane offers some fun opportunities for animal interaction.
A favorite activity is reading to the puppies and kittens, which is great social time for kids and animals alike! Along with hanging out with the animals here at the shelter, campers will get the chance to meet some exotic animal friends as well. From bugs to birds to giant snakes, you never know who, or what, might make an appearance at Camp Humane!
Camp Humane Guest Presenters
Have you ever wanted to ask a veterinarian about their job?
What about a dog trainer? Or a zookeeper? Are you interested in learning more about the native animal species that live here in Texas? Camp Humane hosts several guest presenters who do some amazing work at the SAHS and in the local San Antonio community. These interesting presentations and engaging activities will teach campers about animal behavior, careers working with animals, Texas ecology, habitat conservation, and more!
