San Antonio Humane Society
Info from Hurricane Harvey relief work August/September 2017
Note: Harvey’s Heroes Emergency Fund is now closed!
Since Hurricane Harvey began its devastation along the Texas coast, the San Antonio Humane Society (SAHS) continues to shelter and assist pets displaced and at risk due to the destructive weather. Among these evacuees are pets forced to temporarily seek shelter at the SAHS due to the total loss of their homes and shelter pets transferred from the gulf coast due to hazardous conditions and loss of resources.
The SAHS has already made multiple trips to flooded and devastated areas to deliver supplies and rescue dogs and cats in need, and dozens more are on their way. We are currently working with several partners on a national level, to clear our shelter and make room for more storm victims and evacuees as the need arises.
For those looking to help assist the SAHS’s efforts, donations are being accepted through the Harvey’s Heroes Emergency Fund. This fund will help the SAHS offset growing expenses as the SAHS continues to shelter and care for pet evacuees and strays affected by Hurricane Harvey.
Updates: Since Hurricane Harvey hit the Texas Coast,
- The SAHS has rescued, temporarily sheltered, and/or transferred close to 400 dogs and cats from devastated areas.
- Supplied or plan to help supply shelters in Corpus Christi, Portland, Aransas Pass, and Houston, Texas.
- 100 pets (already residing at the SAHS and those recently transferred from other shelters due to the storm) have been transported by land and air to Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania and other areas up north to find their forever home.
- For more updates, follow us on social media at our Facebook, Twitter and Instagram pages.
September 4: Another successful morning with the Pittsburgh Aviation Animal Rescue Team (PAART) as we waved goodbye to 25 dogs making their way north for the opportunity to find their new forever homes. In total, the PAART land and air team transported 67 pets (residents from the SAHS and pets transferred from various shelters along the coast) to Pennsylvania.
How YOU can Help:
Every day shines a brilliant light on the generosity of our community—there are so many individuals and groups to thank as we continue assisting with Harvey disaster relief. We are trying our best to express all our thanks (we hope it shows!), but just know: we and our pets are overwhelmed by your hospitality and your thoughts during this busy time.
As a no-kill shelter, space is always limited. Help us free up more space by fostering a pet in need!
To those interested in volunteering at the San Antonio Humane Society, to assist our staff with the influx of Hurricane Harvey evacuee pets, strays, transfer pets, etc., we ask that you please visit SAhumane.org/volunteer to sign up as a volunteer. Thank you so much to those who have volunteered their time to help all of our pets at the SAHS!
Whether you’re able to give supplies or funds, every bit helps!
Donate to our Harvey’s Heroes Emergency Fund and help us offset our growing expenses as we continue to shelter and care for pet evacuees and strays affected by Hurricane Harvey.
